I'll tell you how this song came about. I had opened, with the Pack River Band, in concert for Steve Holy down in Oregon. After we finished playing, I went out into the crowd and the first one to come up to me was a young boy about nine or ten years old. He had on a big, black cowboy hat and cowboy boots and he looked up at me and said "Mister, you're the one that was singing up there !". I said, "yes I am" and he reached out his hand; his eyes were the size of silver dollars and he was grinning from ear to ear. I gave him my autograph and I thought how special he made me feel. On the way back to Idaho I got to thinking about some friends I know, Verna and Harold, who work with Wishing Star, and how they must feel everytime they help to grant an ill child's wish and I wrote down this song.

WELL, I WOKE UP THIS MORNING AND I PUT ON THE COFFEE
AND I PULLED ON MY BEST OL’ PAIR OF JEANS
THEN I TUCKED IN THE TAILS OF MY ONLY WHITE SHIRT
LORD, I MUSTA BEEN A SIGHT TO SEE

NOW IT SEEMED LIKE IT MUSTA BEEN ABOUT A HUNDRED YEARS
SINCE I’D PICKED UP THAT OLD GUITAR
BUT NOW I HAD THIS GIG FOR A TEN YEAR OLD KID
WHO HAD MADE ME HIS WISH AT WISHING STAR

WELL, I WALKED INTO HIS ROOM WITH MY GUITAR IN MY HAND
AND HE SMILED A COUNTRY GRIN FROM EAR TO EAR
SO I SHOOK HIS HAND AND HE SAID, I’M YOUR BIGGEST FAN
AND I SURE AM GLAD YOU FINALLY MADE IT HERE

(AND SO) I PLAYED THAT GUITAR … LIKE I’D NEVER PLAYED BEFORE
IN ANY A’THEM OLD HONKY TONKS OR BARS
THIS WAS THE MOST IMPORTANT GIG, I EVER HAD TO GIVE
WHEN I PLAYED FOR THAT KID FROM WISHING STAR

I PLAYED SONG AFTER SONG AND COULD HAVE KEPT ON PLAYING ON
FROM THE LOVE THAT LIT UP HIS WHOLE FACE
HE WAS SMILING AND A’CLAPPING TO EVERY TUNE I PLAYED
BUT THEN HIS MAMA SAID “YOU KNOW IT’S GETTING LATE”

SO I SHOOK HIS HAND AGAIN AND I FORCED A GRIN
AND I THANKED HIM THEN I WISHED HIM ALL THE BEST …
HE SAID “ MISTER, DON’T YOU WORRY, ‘CAUSE I’M GOING TO HEAVEN
SO YOU STAY HERE AND PLAY FOR ALL THE REST … “

NOW, I PLAYED THAT OL’ GUITAR … LIKE I’D NEVER PLAYED BEFORE
IN ANY OLD HONKY TONK OR BAR
THIS WAS THE MOST IMPORTANT GIG, THAT I EVER HAD TO GIVE
WHEN I PLAYED FOR THAT KID FROM WISHING STAR

YEAH, I PLAYED THAT OL’ GUITAR … LIKE I’D NEVER PLAYED BEFORE
IN ANY OLD HONKY TONK OR BAR
THIS WAS THE MOST IMPORTANT GIG, THAT I EVER HAD TO GIVE
WHEN I PLAYED FOR THAT KID FROM WISHING STAR
